Erdogan Promised Trump That Turkey Will Take Over Battle Against ISIS

Speaking on the upcoming Turkish invasion of Syria, President Recep
Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed that not only will Turkey be attacking the
Kurdish YPG, as previously announced, but that he promised President Trump he would also take over the battle against ISIS

Turkey has been threatening to invade Kurdish YPG territory for months.
The invasion is expected to begin after the US withdraws from Syria.
Kurdish officials have indicated that their own fight with ISIS will
likely be on hold once they’re shifting to defend against Turkey.

Erdogan has long presented ISIS and the YPG as equal threats, and views
both as terrorist groups. Actually fighting ISIS is likely to be on hold
for quite some time, however, as Syria’s small ISIS territory is on the
opposite side of YPG territory.

In practice, this likely means that the Syrian government will move into
the area in the interim, allowing them to retake those towns on the
Euphrates River, and potentially the nearby natural gas facilities,
while the Kurds’ attention shifts northward.
